An introduction to this most painterly of printmaking techniques. Participants should bring a selection of good quality brushes with which to paint their image and several lower quality brushes for applying a range of liquids. An image from which to work will also be essential.
Gail Kelly: "First Light" lithograph
This planographic process is based on the antipathy between grease and water. A drawing is made on a grained slab of limestone using greasy crayons or washes, which is then treated with gum Arabic and a solution of nitric acid. Once dampened with a sponge the non image areas of the stone rejects ink whilst the greasy area attracts ink from the roller. The inked image is transferred to to paper using a litho press. Colour Lithographs require each colour to have a separate drawing, process and printing.
