'Tree ECG' 1/4

Photo-intaglio/chine colle with water washable inks

Image size 48 x 38cms

Interpreting anodyne as something that soothes and induces a sense of well-being I decided upon trees as the subject. I incorporated a healthy electro cardio gram reading as a measurement of this giving arriving at ‘Tree ECG.’ This is a simple two plate print using photo-intaglio and water-washable inks.

I started using non-toxic printmaking processes in 1994 with the introduction of photopolymer film as a new way of transferring the image to the plate. This is a two stage process which involves exposing a random dot matrix to the photosensitive plate first, followed by the image. The random dot acts like an aquatint to hold the ink eliminating the need for etching in acid. If acid etching is needed less harmful mordants like ferric chloride or cupric salt etch can replace the more harmful nitric acid.
