Kathryn Marshall: Captured, photo-intaglio

kathrynmarshallcapturedphotointaglio.jpg

I decided to stage my own image with elements of the Schwemberger story. The James & Burke camera, the photograph of “Nine girls” and the Newton’s Rings (described in the very technical preservation process of the original plates) forming a target. All combine to create a rather startling if not menacing print.

Such photographs will always raise debate – How much was straightforward recording, how much was staged?

Does it record or impose cultural/religious meanings on the subject(s) or photographer?

Whatever the interpretations, photography freezes the moment in time, it “captures”, for better or for worse.

I used the photo-intaglio process, which I felt was most in keeping with the project.
