Catherine Thompson was born in Reading, Berkshire, and moved to Belfast as a young child. She studied printing and woven textiles at Belfast College of Art between 1961 and 1965, and started her career as a textile designer exhibiting at the Design Ulster '77 in the Ulster Office in London.

In 1981 she joined Seacourt Print Workshop and was immediately attracted to the medium of printmaking. In 1991 she became a Director and has since taught regular courses there and played a leading role in the introduction of non-toxic methods and materials to the studio. She exhibits her work regularly, and has work in collections such as the Royal Victoria Hospital, Allied Irish Bank, Banque Nationale de Paris, The Brian Burn Collection of Irish Art (San Francisco).

"Landscape is often the source of my imagery. It is the colour, light and structure of nature that excites me. My present preoccupation is with water, creating images that whilst abstract, portray qualities of movement, light and reflective patterns, making them immediately recognizable."
