Margaret Arthur was born in Derry, Northern Ireland of Donegal parents. She studied fine art in Belfast, did a post-graduate year at Brighton College of Art and completed a teaching degree at the Ulster College of Art & Design (A.T.D.). In 1981, she co-founded Seacourt Print Workshop in Bangor, Co. Down, of which she is now an Honorary Trustee. She continues to work there as a full-time artist and tutor in printmaking, and has taught at all levels of education.

Since 1966, Margaret has had several solo exhibitions in Belfast, Dublin, in Europe and America. She lived and worked in Washington D.C. for a year and has been instrumental in ongoing exchange exhibitions there and other international venues. She exhibits regularly at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin and the Royal Ulster Academy, Belfast.

"My work explores the essence of relationships, often symbolically, sometimes narratively. Through the medium of printmaking and the layering of images, the physical merges with the spiritual, integrating the inner landscape of our bodies with the outer landscape of our lives. My present work, "...a life more precious now' (quote from John Hewitt), is the culmination of a journey from the severance of family roots to the celebration of life and time."
