Looking at the Schwemberger photographs, I was immediately delighted by the wealth of rich pattern in the clothes and jewellery of the women. More than anything, however, I was struck by their haunting stares and stiff unnatural poses, perhaps necessitated by the slow shutter speed.
I have tried to convey this by forcing the figures into the confines of rectangular linocuts, while making a patchwork of their patterned fabrics.
