Debbie Smyth: Red Stag, screenprint

The inspiration for this piece of work comes from one image in the collection. It is a classroom full of children in European dress, with only the back of their heads visible and at the front of the room, a range of chalk drawings on a blackboard. The rigidity of the scene drew my attention to the European influences on this culture, contrasting with the chalk drawings of animals which, to me, were full of history and pointed to the fading memories of another tradition.

My own work includes ideas of memory and loss with early symbolism and lettering so naturally I researched into ancient drawings from the history of this particular culture. The piece I produced includes some inverted symbols from a cave wall that are now barely visible.
