Henriette Alexander: Lost World (in two parts - I Griddle, II Milking), etching

On seeing the Schwemberger Photographs I was immediately struck by the similarities with mural life in the Northern Ireland of 60 years ago and of how that is now a lost way of life.

The daily routine of woman such as my elderly relative consisted of milking by hand – at the ‘crack’ of dawn while dirty tails flicked across her face, scrubbing floors on all fours, baking bread on an open fire – using a goose wing to brush the flour off; all the while having frequent meals on the table for the men folk as they returned from the fields.

Dressing up (as possibly happened for the Schwemberger photographs) was only for Sunday worship in the little protestant church.

“Temporal makers of our past” seems an apt phrase.
