Jacob Semko

For many years Seacourt Print Workshop has provided opportunities for artists to visit and work at its Bangor based facility. The exchange of ideas and approaches to printmaking has been inspiring to its members and beneficial to the wider community with participating artists delivering numerous outreach programmes and public classes. This year, as part of a year long programme researching safer approaches to printmaking Canadian artist Jacob Semko was selected for a three month residency. Travelling from temperatures of -40 degrees, Jacob has been enjoying Bangor’s mild weather conditions as he starts to create artworks using the technique of waterless lithography.

Jacob will be providing a talk on his artwork at the North Down Community Network on Thursday 22nd January at 7.30pm. The talk is free and open to the public. During his three month stay he will also be delivering talks at the South Eastern Regional College and the University of Ulster. A weekend workshop in waterless lithography will take place on Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th March between 10am and 4pm. Places cost £80.00 and can be booked through the Seacourt office. An exhibition which will include some of the prints created by Jacob during his residency will open in Ards Arts Centre on Thursday 2nd of April 2009. Entitled ‘Anodyne’ the exhibition will provide an overview of safer printmaking methods researched by Penny Brewill over the past twelve months and which have now been introduced as permanent techniques at Seacourt Print Workshop. Over twenty artists will be represented in the exhibition which will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

Jacob’s visit and the exhibition catalogue have been made possible by Lottery funding through Awards for All.
