Intaglio printing means 'in the lines'. The artist draws with a needle onto a copper plate that has been covered with acid resistant wax. When the plate is immersed in acid, the bare metal exposed by the lines of the drawing is eroded. Once the etching process has been completed the plates are inked and run through the printing press.
